The Authority of Jesus

Reading:  Matthew 7
My Verse:   "And when Jesus finished these sayings,
the crowds were astonished at  his teachings,
for he was teaching them as one
                        who had authority,
and not as their scribes" (Matthew 7:28-29).

Something was definitely different about the teaching of Jesus.  He  went beyond the law, he demanded serious personal investment of his believers - real action, not pretentious religiosity.  Jesus spoke with an authority that was so obviously divine and inherent.

"Judge not, that you be not judged"  (7:1).  This is a hard one, LORD God.  I know I must be ever so careful about critiquing others - being intolerant.   Galatians 6:1 says we are to help others in trouble with much gentleness.

"Ask, and it will be given" (7:7).  Love this, if I am in need I am to ask You.  For You are my Father in heaven and You will "give good things to those who ask him!"

The Golden Rule  I am to treat others as I would have them treat me!  This is so simple and obvious,  thank you, LORD Jesus for this!

Then You, Jesus give us some warnings.

Two Gates:  We all choose between the "narrow" gate and the "wide" gate.  The narrow gate is so because it is only through You, Jesus.  The wide gate is so because it is the world.  Sadly more choose the wide gate than the narrow gate.   Help me, LORD God to be faithful in prayer for those I know and love to find their way through the narrow gate.

Good vs False Prophets:  You told us above not to be judgmental but here we are to use the brain you gave us to be discerning.  We are to be as the Bereans and make sure that   what a teacher teaches is truly of You!  (Acts 17:11)

Real vs True Disciples:  This brings to mind a saying:  "Many will wake up surprised in hell."
Just because someone is showing great works this does not mean they are truly of You, LORD God.  Just because someone says they profess Christ does not mean they do in their hearts.  We, as believers, are to be on guard against these pretenders.

Firm or False Foundation:  The religious community of the day had built their foundation on tradition and rituals.  I must have my foundation firmly on You and Your word, LORD God!
Anything else will be washed away by the many storms of life.

You are a God of Love, Compassion, Order , Goodness and Rightness but also of supreme Authority!

Tools to Deal With Anxiety

Reading:  Matthew 6
My Verse:  "Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.
Sufficient for the day is its own trouble" (Matthew 6:34).

Anxiety:  distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear
of danger or misfortune  -online dictionary

Anxiety is a given.  We all suffer from it at some point in our lives, in varying degrees - for some it is a constant nag, for others it is debilitating and yet others seem to struggle through it somehow.  You, Jesus explain to  us how to manage/respond to anxiety.  You give us the tools we need here to not only live with anxiety, but manage it.

#1:  "Giving to the Needy" (verses 1-4)  You tell us we are to give of ourselves
to others secretly.  I like this!  It is like
we are to be little elves, secretly
                                                                 helping others whenever we can!

#2:  "The Lord's Prayer" (verses5-15)   You tell us we are to pray.  You even
teach us how we are to pray.  Basically,
this tells me that I am unable
to navigate this life on my own.
I need You to help me.

#3.  "Fasting"  (vers 16-18)   You tell us here we  are to either completely stop
eating or eat very little for a period of time.
John Piper teaches that fasting is a way of
increasing our longing for You, Jesus.  He
teaches that it also is a way of forcing us to
expose the defects in our lives that may
                                                be hampering us.

#4:  "Lay up treasures in heaven"  You tell us not to seek after personal gain.
That should should not be our life focus.
                                                        You tell us we cannot
                                                        "serve God and money."

#5:  "Do not be anxious" (verses 25-34)  You tell us we are to "seek first the
                                                                  kingdom of God and his
                                                                  righteousness,
and all these things will be
added to you".  "All these things"
being everything we need to live
                                                                 rich and full lives.

You love us more than we know and You know all that we need as you do
"the birds of the air" and "the flowers of the field."

Thank you for this, LORD God.  Help me today to keep my focus on You for only You
can set my mind at ease and right what is wrong in it.

Only You can help me to manage my anxiety.

Beyond Rules & Laws!

Reading:  Matthew 5
My Verse:  "You therefore must be perfect,
as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).

What a challenge!  You, LORD God, ask us to go beyond  the old expectations of good behavior.  You challenge us to go a step further.  You challenge us to go beyond rules and laws!

Jesus opens his ministry with a bang!  He turns everything upside down for the staid church that was so set upon old traditions that had become increasingly self-serving to the church hierarchy.

First we are given those amazing beatitudes in verses 2-11.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit . . .
Blessed are those who mourn . . .
     Blessed are the meek . . .
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness . . .
     Blessed are the merciful  . . .
     Blessed are the peacemakers . . .
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake . . .
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you . . . on my account . . ."

These give us a whole new focus.  These tell us to take our focus off of ourselves and onto You!

You tell us we are to be "salt" and "light" in this world so that others might see You in us.

Finally, You tell us that if we even think of sinful things, that is as good as doing it!  You tell us this by going through some of our worse sins.

Anger:  You say that, of course, one is liable if murder is committed.
But You say if we are even
              "angry with a brother"
              "insults his brother"
tells him "You fool"  - we are liable.

Lust:    Of course adultery is wrong but You go further here as well.
"everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has
already committed adultery with her in his heart."

Divorce:  By divorcing ones spouse we cause them to commit adultery by remarrying.

Oaths:  The old law says, "You shall not swear falsely"
but you say we should not take any kind of oath.
For we do not have the power to make it come about.
Only You have that kind of power.

Retaliation:  Oh, this is a hard one.
If someone hits you, turn the other cheek!
If someone sues you for your robe, give him your cloak!
If someone forces you to go a mile, go two!
If someone begs from you, do not refuse him.

Love your enemies:  The old law says we are to love our neighbor
                                     and hate our enemies.
You tell us we are to love our enemies also!

You want so much for us, LORD God!  You want us to strive to be perfect.

"You therefore must be perfect . . ."

I will never be perfect but I am to keep on keeping on in that direction.  Be on being
perfect!

Physical and Spiritual

Reading:  Matthew 3, 4
My Verse:  "Then the devil left him,
                      and behold,
angels came and were ministering to him" (Matthew 4:11).

The juxtaposition between our physical and spiritual being is fascinating.  Here  Matthew reveals a very active interaction between the physical and spiritual realms.

We are physical beings and need to care for these amazing physical bodies.  But we are also spiritual beings and have spiritual needs that we also need to care for.

Here we are told after Jesus fasted for "forty days and forty nights"  he was sorely tempted by the devil.  The devil offered him physical things - bread, freedom from physical harm, and all the world before his eyes.

Jesus countered each temptation with scripture focusing on the spiritual needs:

When Satan offered bread in a taunt, Jesus responded -
"But he answered, It is written
Thou shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).

When offered freedom from physical harm again in a taunt, Jesus responded -
"Again, it is written,
You shall not put the LORD your God to the test" (Matthew 4:7).

When offered all that he could see with his eyes if he (Jesus) would fall down and
worship Satan Jesus responded -
"Be gone, Satan!
   For it is written,
You shall worship the LORD your God
and him only shall you serve" (Matthew 4:10)

After that terrible ordeal, "angels came and were ministering to him."  Jesus was God and yet man.  He was in human form and his body needed care just as our does.  But because he was God angels did come to care for his physical needs.

This passage emphasizes the need to nurture not only my physical needs but also my spiritual needs.   Many try to live out their lives ignoring the spiritual and find a deep emptiness - an emptiness that one cannot fill with physical things.

By ignoring the spiritual one tends to become involved in things contrary to Your laws, LORD God.  We want so much to fill that emptiness that we will allow ourselves to push aside our conscience and slowly but surely spiral downward and away from you.

Thank you for this wonderful reminder that there is so much more to this world than what I can see with my eyes!  And thank you for this story of how Jesus dealt with temptation.  Help me to turn my eyes ever to you in my deepest needs - both physical and spiritual.

A Compelling Story

Reading:  Matthew 1, 2
My Verse:     ". . . an angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream . . ."

"Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?
For we saw his star when it rose
and have come to worship him"

"And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose
went before them until it came to rest
over the place where the child was"

"And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed to their own country by another way"

". . . an angel of the LORD appeared to Joseph in a dream
                                and said,
"Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee . . ."

"But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the LORD
appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and
go the the land of Israel . . ."
                                                         (Matthew 1:20, 2:2, 10, 12, 13 19).

This passage is fascinating in so many ways, LORD God.  It seems the more
that I read your word, the more fascinated and intrigued I become!  Your Word is filled with drama, mystery, human pathos, betrayal, violence, hints of otherworldliness, and mostly Your amazing love and purpose! That purpose of the saving power of Jesus runs through the entire Bible, binding the centuries of people and events together into a story that is so very compelling.

These two chapters of Matthew speak of that incredible time when Jesus came into the world, of that time when You, LORD God, intervened - broke into the realm of man to provide a way of salvation.  To provide us a way out of the messes we dig ourselves into.

I watched Wonder Woman on the flight home this last weekend - I admit it was my second viewing.  The thing that struck me is how the movie speaks to our inability to make it on our own.   I do not even begin to understand the world viewpoint of those who wrote the screenplay and directed the movie but because it is in the original story that is what comes out - our need.  How we do need intervention.  How we need salvation.

Thank You for intervening in my life.  Thank you for Jesus.  Thank You for this most compelling story.

A Book of Remembrance

Reading:  Malachi
My Verse:  "Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another.
The LORD paid attention and heard them,
and a book of remembrance was written before him
of those who feared the LORD
and esteemed his name" (Malachi 3:16).

This I always find so very fascinating.  That there is such a book in heaven.  That You keep such a book LORD God.  You, who are omniscient!  Is this simply for our benefit?  To make it clear to us that You will remember us and how we have lived this life that You gifted us with?

". . . blot me out of your book that you have written" (Exodus 32:32).

"Are they not  in your book?" (Psalm 56:8)

"Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there were none of them" (Psalm 139:16).

"the court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened" (Daniel 7:10).

"But at that time your people shall be delivered,
everyone whose name shall be found written in the book" (Daniel 12:1).

"And I saw the dead,
     great and small,
     standing before the throne,
     and books were opened.

Then another book was opened, which is the book of life" (Revelation 20:12).

I am so very grateful for the written word.  For the many stories and books that have helped to enrich my life.  Thank You, LORD God, for giving us this means of communication.

But I am especially grateful for this great "book of remembrance!"  For I know that I am in it!

That Day!

Reading:  Zechariah 10 - 14
My Verse:  "Behold, a day is coming for the LORD . . .
On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives . . .
On that day there shall be no light, cold or frost. . .
On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem . . .

And the LORD will be king over all the earth.

On that day the LORD will be one
and his name one"  (Zechariah 14: 1-9).

So much here I do not understand.  So much mystery and awesomeness!  You, LORD God, in all your glory.  I do look forward to "that day"  which is so beyond our ability to comprehend at this time.  What I do comprehend is that such a day is coming.  You are coming again to this earth.

We are continually fascinated by the otherness of our world - paintings, movies, literature, gaming reveal this.  We know in the deepest recesses of our being that, yes we are not alone in this universe!  You tell us that in Your word, the Bible.

"For by him all things were created,
in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -
all things were created through him and for him" (Colossians 1:16).

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
   but against the rulers,
   against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places"  (Ephesians 6:12).

". . . who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God,
   with angels, authorities, and
powers having been subjected to him"  (1 Peter 3:22).

"I will no longer talk much with you,
for the ruler of this world is coming.
He had no claim on me . . ." (John 14:30).

". . . in which you once walked,
following the course of this world,
the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-- (Ephesians 2:2).

"The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days,
but Michael, one of the chief princes,
   came to help me,
for I was left there with the kings of Persia . . . " (Daniel 10:13)

Yes, there are "others" out there.  "Others"  we cannot see and mostly are unaware of.  But from my understanding of what scripture says of these "others"  they are not confined by the same physical rules of existence as we are.

This strong desire to understand or know more about the otherness of our world has existed throughout our history.  Many early civilizations devoted much time and effort to this search.  Today we have a national organization dedicated to finding these "others."  The SETI Institute's mission
statement is

"Our mission is to explore, understand, and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe . . . "

SETI or Search for Extraterrestrial Technology Intelligence  " seeks evidence of life in the universe by looking for some signature of its technology. "

To do this they have many probes into outer space looking for some kind of radio signal that indicates an artificial intelligence.  Many millions of dollars has been invested into this search.

I do not pretend to understand  all the science that goes into it.  Nor  if this search is worthwhile.  You tell us LORD God to be ever searching to understand our world.  You gave us incredible minds that we are meant to use. We are never to be satisfied with status quo. (2 Timothy 2:15)

And yet, there is also the fact that we can be so very blinded to truth and true understanding of the vast concepts of our world and existence.  You, LORD God, tell us that satan is the -  "deceiver of the whole world."  (Revelation 12:9).

Is the SETI search a mere distraction?  A distraction from seeking real truth?  I saw a blurb that stated - "Satan's greatest weapon is man's lack of understanding of God's Word."

Thank you for organizations like ICR - Institute of Creation Research, which has many incredible scientists who do their research out of their understanding of You and Your word and their strong belief that You are truth.

"The unfolding of your word gives light . . ." (Psalm 119:130).

I can look forward confidently to "that day" when You return.

New Year Resolutions!

Reading:  Zechariah 8, 9
My Verse: "These are the things that you shall do:
                         Speak the truth to one another;
render in your gates judgements that are true
                            and make peace;
                         do not devise evil in your hearts against one another;
                         and love no false oath,
for all these things I hate,
declares the LORD"  (Zechariah 8:16, 17).

We are talking about our new year resolutions.  As we do this I keep running into this - You, LORD God have them all laid out in Your word.  We only need to look to You for direction in this.

"Speak the truth to one another."  Help me in this, LORD God.  Help me to be truthful in all things, to all people, to myself and most of all to You!  This is what you love, that I am truthful.

"Render judgements the are true."  Wisdom comes from You, LORD God.  Help me to not be judgmental of others.  Help me to seek truth whenever I am required to make a judgement on anything.

"Make peace."  This is is something that I do seek.  Help me to be wise in this LORD God.  Help me to know when I need to be quiet and when I need to speak up.  Help me to have the courage needed here.  This requires putting aside the self and putting You at the center of every situation!

"Do not devise evil in your hearts against one another."  Love this.  Reminds me of Micah 2:1.

"Woe to those who devise wickedness
and work evil on their beds!
When the morning dawns, they perform it,
because it is in the power of their hand."

Just because a thing is possible or within our ability to do does not mean it is right.  Some things may "feel" so right because they make us "feel" good in the moment or even for a while after.  But our feelings can lead us astray.  Sadly, we often feel good about the wrong things.  Thank You, LORD God, for your wisdom in giving us a conscience, and creating us after Your own image that we have Your rightness stamped on our hearts.  We do know, eventually, when we have done a wrong.  Planning or devising an evil against another is never right.

"Love no false oath"  This is an interesting statement.  I am not sure I understand what this means.  It sounds like I am required to know when someone is making a false oath?  It does make me think of all the "fake news" talk today.  And it makes me think of all the untruths spoken in our highest levels of government - seemingly blatantly spoken.  Help me, LORD God, to be ever aware of  all falseness.

Thank you, LORD God, that we need only look to You for guidance in improving our lives.

"Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all the day long" (Psalm 25:5).

"Teach me your way, O LORD.
     that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name" (Psalm 86:11).
