Reading: Acts 9, 10, 11, 12
My Verse: "And Peter opened his mouth and said; Most certainly and thoroughly I now perceive and understand that God shows no partiality and is no respecter of persons." (Acts 10:34)
Talk about exciting times! I find it hard to stop reading here - Lord, this is a wonderful account of You at work in man - opening up their minds to Your Truth! Even the minds of great leaders like Peter. This was a hard truth for the Jews. There was such a deep entrenched generational enmity between Jew and Gentile. And yet Peter rose to the occasion as You lead him to realize this new ground breaking Truth - "that God shows no partiality and is no respecter of person." You were revealing to Peter, Lord, that all people were created by You, all people were to be reached out to with Your gospel.
It is interesting reading when Peter did get to the home of Cornelius. The first thing he says is, "You yourselves are aware how it is not lawful or permissible for a Jew to keep company with or visit or even to come near or to speak first to anyone of another nationality . . " What they were doing what unheard of. They were breaking barriers! What Peter says next is huge! "...but God has shown and taught me by words that I should not call any human being common or unhallowed or unclean." (10:28)
And so Peter speaks the gospel to Cornelius, a Gentile. Cornelius and his household are saved and baptized. And for confirmation that this was indeed of God the Holy Spirit visibly fell on each of the new converts. It is pretty wonderful stuff!
I thank You, Lord, for how this read. It not only reminds me of how I need to be "no respecter of persons" but also how I need to be, like Peter, ever open to Your teaching.
"Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for Your are the God of my salvation; for You do I wait all the day long." (Psalm 25:5)
