Reading: Ephesians 1
My Verse: "I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe . . . " (1:16-10 ESV).
This is so wonderful that today, Christmas Eve, I would be reading this chapter. This is a prayer that I like to pray for those that are especially close to me. Lord, You are amazing - that You would give this to me on this day - the eve of Your birthday. Paul so excellently states that which is most important.
I especially like the very first part of this prayer, "By having the eyes of your hearts enlightened". We so need the eyes of our hearts lit up - our minds opened up to Your Truth! Without it we understand nothing. Without it we cannot "know and understand the hope to which He has called you". You only enable us to fully understand this "hope", this hope that You have given us - the "hope" of You our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
The second part is rather astounding. For the longest time I have totally misread and misunderstood this verse. I always thought it was talking about what I will inherit from You Lord, but no! I am the inheritance, "His glorious inheritance"! I think I missed this because it never really occurred to me that You Lord love me so much You look at my coming to You as Your inheritance! Wow.
Finally, the third part of this prayer which states"and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe. . . ". Apparently, there was a great deal of occultism at the time this was written. The believers needed reassurance that You, Lord are all powerful. We, today also need to hear this. There is as much evil today as then I am sure, but we also live in time when world events are so frenetic and on the verge of chaos. We need to know that You, Lord, are all powerful. We need to know that those of us who belong to You need not fear for You hold us in the palm of Your hand. "Behold I have indelibly imprinted you on the palm of each of My hands." Isaiah 49:16)
The refrain of the song On Eagle's Wings speaks this beautifully.
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
bear you up on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
and hold you in the palm of His hand.
Yes, I am so blessed! Lord light up the eyes of my heart today and tomorrow! Help me to live with this "Hope" indelibly imprinted on my heart, with the wonderful knowledge that I am Your inheritance, and with the assurance that You are all powerful and as Your child I need fear nothing.
