Reading: Psalms 34 - 37
My Verse: "Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil" (Psalm 37:8,9).
How I need this reminder! Fretting is easy to do. I can get so caught up in fretting over this and that. You, LORD God know this about me, about us! You know how we think we can affect things by fretting. When in reality all we do is make ourselves ill. Fretting only leads to adverse physical symptoms in our bodies.
Medical research shows how fretting, being anxious about things, leads to all kinds of physical ailments, even to the point of death and/or mental illness if we don't stop it.
Psalm 31:15 states. "My times are in Your hand . . ." Oh, LORD God, how I need to keep this at the forefront of my mind! What a freeing thought!
I also like what Job said in Job 14:5. "A person's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed." Here you tell us there is no point fretting about our age or lifespan because we have no say in that! You determine that! I especially like that You "set limits he cannot exceed." This is so reassuring for those that love You, because it tells me that You protect us from ourselves.
Finally, in Your own words You tell us:
"Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens, they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, 'O you of little faith!'" (Luke 12:22-28).
This is by no means permission to live life as if we cared about nothing. On the contrary, You want us to live full meaningful lives, caring for those around us. To not be anxious frees us to live as You would have us!
Being anxious is a major drag on our emotions, our energy! LORD God, thank you for this message, this reminder. Life is not only a gift but it is also short - help me make the most of it!
"You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure" (Psalm 39:5).
Help me, LORD God to not be fretting today!
