Reading: Psalms 132 - 138
My Verse: "On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased" (138:3).
I am so constantly amazed, LORD God, at the little treasures I find in Your Word. Those special little bits that grab me, intrigue and pique my curiosity and wonder. Here the little phrase "my strength of soul" catches my attention.
This tells me I need help not only physically. mentally and emotionally but also spiritually. I must cry out to You to strengthen my soul! It is a very important part of me! You tell us to "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30). I am not to neglect any part of my being - my spirituality is actually most important as it has to do with my very eternity! (Matthew 16:26)
I think of all those that refuse to acknowledge their souls. They push aside that part of themselves and carry on with their lives as if they do not face eternity. That is until death looms large in front of them! Blaise Pascal in Pascal's Pensees says of those that refuse to acknowledge their souls:
"I find it necessary to point out the sinfulness of those men who live in indifference to the search for truth in a matter which is so important to them, and which touches them so nearly.
Of all their errors, this doubtless is the one which most convicts them of foolishness and blindness . . .
For it is not to be doubted that the duration of this life is but a moment . . .
At this point, therefore, we condemn those who live without thought of the ultimate end of life, who let themselves be guided by their own inclinations, and their own pleasures without reflection and without concern, and , as if they could annihilate eternity by turning away their thought from it, think, only of making themselves happy for the moment."
Oh, LORD God, I pray for loved ones the prayer of Paul in Ephesians 3:14-19:
"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith - that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
I thank You, LORD God for this lovely phrase, "my strength of soul you increased!" I am so grateful for the wonderful truths you reveal to me. Help me to have that simple, strong faith Emily Dickenson portrayed in her lovely poem.
I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.
My soul is strengthened!
