While Earth Remains . . .
Reading: Genesis 7,8
My Verse: "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease" (8:22).
There is so much in these few words, "While the earth remains." There is a promise here and there is a warning. There is also a sadness because prior to this verse You say that You will "never again curse the ground because of man, for the imagination of man's heart is evil and wicked from his youth, neither will I ever again smite and destroy every living thing, as I have done." It is almost like you have reconciled yourself to the fact of man's sinful nature. You are in a sense relenting and are now allowing a way for man to be saved, to repent of his sin and become a new person.
You created us in Your image. This verse helps me to see You as an entity that feels - that hurts and mourns. I see Your compassion here. You cannot abide sin because You are holy but You are also loving and caring. You are willing to provide a way for us to come back to You. So many see You as a God so far removed from us and totally unable to understand where we are but that is so not true. You are a God that responds to us, to how we respond to You and Your offer of love and redemption.
The promise here is something we humans should find so very reassuring. Our world can at times be pretty scary with the earthquakes, storms, fires, and war that seems to be continually going on. Despite all this we can be assured that the seasons will continue and "day and night will not cease" while the earth remains!
But there is that word "while" to consider. This would indicate that this earth as we know it will not always be here. You, LORD God, are warning us. Revelation is the culmination of earth's story. The earth is in a steady state of decay. This is the consequence of sin. Even the second Law of Thermodynamics states. "All natural systems degenerate when left to themselves." Isaiah 24:19-20 gives an amazing prophesy concerning the end times and the final result of earth's decline.
"The earth is broken asunder,
the earth is split through,
the earth is shaken violently.
the earth reels to and fro like a drunkard
And it totters like a shack,
For its transgression is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, never to rise again."
Because You are compassionate and loving You implore us LORD God to call upon You that You might save us while we are still able.
"Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon Him while He is near" (Isaiah 55:6).
