Reading: Hebrews 3
My Verse: "Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another everyday, as long as it is called 'today,' that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin" (3:12,13).
Regrets are no fun for they linger and drag one down. Often one has the option to remedy a situation. More often than not one does not have that option but then time seems to lessen the regret. Turning away from God is one of those regrets that no one wants to have for time will not lessen the pain of eternal separation from You.
Here the author is exhorting us to "take care". For to have a "wicked, unbelieving heart . . . leading you to turn away from the living God" is the one sin for which there is no forgiveness. Those that do not "take care" and fall into this face eternal condemnation - eternal regret that they did not believe in You, the living God. I know this does not mean we can lose our salvation. It means that there are many who think they are saved but are not. James McDonald does a wonderful lesson called, Are You Saved? He poses some very hard questions that make you really examine yourself. Thank you Lord for such teachers who further exhort us to "take care".
The author of Hebrews tells us to "exhort one another everyday." This is such an important call to the church to encourage and uphold one another. This speaks to the importance of church. Too many think they can live for you on their own. You, Lord God created the church for this very purpose. We really do need each other. I am reminded here that church is not just for me to get encouragement for myself but also for me to give encouragement to others!
Finally, we are to do this "as long as it is called 'today'." This indicates that there is coming a time when we will no longer have a 'today' - they will come to an end. One day You will return as You promised and at that time everything changes. I heard a speaker the other day say he felt Your return was imminent! I loved that. How we need to live with that thought in mind for "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, . . . " (Matthew 24:36).
To be eternally separated from You, Lord Jesus, would be the ultimate regret! I thank You, Lord, for drawing me to You and saving me.
